Grant Supports College-Prep Activities for Southern Tioga Students

In Spring 2012, Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Outreach for K-12 Office coordinated a number of college-readiness events for the Southern Tioga School District.
The activities were funded by $9,000 from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s Creating Access to Postsecondary Schools program. The program, intended to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education, is funded through a federal College Access Challenge grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The partnership between Penn College and the Southern Tioga School District is among 27 such educational partnerships funded by PHEAA’s CAPS program. Postsecondary partners are tasked with providing activities and services that help increase awareness among their assigned district’s students (and parents) of the available postsecondary educational opportunities.
Funds were used to provide activities for students, parents and faculty in the Southern Tioga School District, including financial-aid workshops and a meeting to explore the feasibility of offering dual enrollment for Southern Tioga students in a Penn College computer-aided design course.
Funds also provided for travel by the school district’s students to attend spring career-exploration events at Penn College, including a Natural Resources Career Event, Open House, Career Day, SMART Girls and NEO Guys.
