Gardeners Urged to Consider ‘Reel’ Advantages

This week’s Green Tip is from the Horticulture Club: With lawn-mowing season upon us, you might consider your old lawn mower and how it performs. If you have a small lawn, you may wish to switch to a reel mower (the type that you manually push through your lawn). Reel mowers have blades that turn with each step taken, and “green” gardeners find they are environmentally friendly, last longer than any other type of mower, need little maintenance and provide exercise. Reel mowers are a fantastic choice if your lawn is small and is free of rocks, weeds, sticks and other debris. So, if you are a real green gardener, consider choosing a reel mower. The weekly Green Tip is a cooperative venture of the Energy Conservation Subcommittee (part of Penn College’s Governance system) and the School of Natural Resources Management’s Horticulture Department. Contacts for the feature are Gail B. Landers, group leader at the Children’s Learning Center and a subcommittee member, and Carl J. Bower Jr., horticulture instructor.
