Gallery Celebrates 10 Years of Contemporary Art

Celebrating a decade of exhibiting contemporary art, The Gallery at Penn College is staging a special anniversary exhibition titled “Take Ten,” showcasing the works of 25 past exhibiting artists.

“Take Ten” runs Aug. 25 through Oct. 9, with an opening reception set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30. A number of the exhibiting artists will be on hand for the special event.

Works featured in “Take Ten” include a range of media: ceramics, digital media, fiber art, installation, mixed media, mosaic, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.



Exhibiting artists, representing each of the 10 years the gallery has been open, are: Anila Quayyum Agha, James Arendt, Morgan Craig, Karen Kettering Dimit, Maureen Drdak, Cynthia Fisher, Jason Godeke, Timothy Hawkesworth, Cynthia Hron, Lauren Kinney, Shalya Marsh, Ned Martin, Amanda McCavour, Timothy McCoy, Gary Mesa-Gaido, Antonio Puri, Tammie Rubin, Rachel Sager, Meredith Setser, Ceil Sturdevant, Cheryl Tall, Daryl Thetford, Miguel Tio, Patrick Vincent and Renee Zettle-Sterling.

The “Take Ten” exhibition is intended to celebrate both the artists and the community that have supported the gallery and its special programs. Visitors will be invited to vote for the People’s Choice award. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

A special exhibition catalog, designed by Ainsley R. Bennett, a senior in the college’s graphic design major, will be available (while supplies last) at the opening reception. The catalog was funded, in part, by the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Since opening in 2006, The Gallery at Penn College has hosted over 55 solo and more than 20 group and traveling exhibitions, featuring a wide variety of exceptional talent and thought-provoking work.

“We believe that access to the arts is a vital part of both our college campus and the community, and we are pleased to offer impressive, educational and thought-provoking exhibits,” said Penny Griffin Lutz, gallery director. “We look forward to continuing to provide high-quality exhibitions to Penn College and the region.”

Other exhibits scheduled for the gallery’s 2016-17 academic year are: “Connected By Stitch,” a collection of fiber artwork by Pennsylvania regional members of Studio Art Quilt Associates, Oct. 22 through Dec. 8; “Transformation,” paintings and installations by Zahra Nazari, Jan. 12 through March 2; “Private Domain,” large-scale figure paintings and costume constructions by Virginia Derryberry, March 14 through April 20; Design: 2017, an annual exhibition of work by Penn College’s graphic design seniors, April 28 through May 12; and “Vestiges,” fabric installations by Kay Healy, May 23 through July 23.

The Gallery at Penn College is on the third floor of Madigan Library. The gallery is open 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays; 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. The gallery will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 4.

In addition to serving as an educational resource for Penn College students and a cultural asset for the college and community, the gallery is dedicated to promoting art appreciation through exhibitions of contemporary art.
