Former faculty member delivers prestigious address

Lynn Hanson, an 11-year member of the Williamsport Area Community College/Pennsylvania College of Technology faculty who retired in 2020 after more than two decades as an English professor at Francis Marion University, delivered the 13th William C. Moran Address on March 24 at that institution's Performing Arts Center in Florence, South Carolina.Hanson, whose address was titled, “Learning By Doing: From Pretending to Becoming,” reflected on lessons learned from a remarkable life and career in business and academics. The address has been a tradition since 2005 and is named after Francis Marion's vice president of academic affairs from 1978-92, who went on to become president of Lander University.
"Working at Pennsylvania College of Technology inspired my belief in experiential learning ... and then confirmed it. Our students often question why teachers assign chapters to read and exercises to complete and papers to write that even teachers don't want to read. People with good old-fashioned common sense, after all, know that all of us learn through experience," the FMU professor emerita said. "Obviously, students have to learn the scales on the piano before they can compose a sonata."
Hanson was among the speakers at a July 2019 on-campus memorial service for Veronica M. Muzic, a longtime educator and administrator.
