Fifteen Penn College Students Certified for Pesticide Application

Fifteen landscape/horticulture technology students at Pennsylvania College of Technology received passing grades on Pennsylvania Pesticide Application examinations administered in early December by the state Department of Agriculture.

Three of the students passed a core exam and category test specializing in trees and ornamentals, designating them to spray commercially, while 12 others passed a private-applicator test that permits them to spray for agricultural purposes.

“Either one of these tests will be a benefit for these students in their careers,” said Carl J. Bower Jr., a horticulture instructor who recently taught the associate-degree students in his Insects and Diseases of Ornamental Plants class. “Employers look for these types of certifications, and it is even more advantageous if the students get these credentials before they graduate.”

The students who passed the core/category test were Samuel W. Hanmer, Harrisburg; Collin P. Mayo, Oreland; and Jeremy L. Thorne, Sugarloaf.

Classmates who passed the private-applicator test are Jackson J. Albert, Liverpool; Nicholas A. Brouse, Shamokin Dam; Brooke L. Dickey, Montgomery; Jonathan T. Hall, Tamaqua; Zachary M. Hammes, Grantville; Kayla M. Henderson, Williamsport; Zachary A. Mueller, East Earl; Adam G. Nyer, Weatherly; Cody A. Reilly, Hamburg; Alexander T. Reiver, Wernersville; Jessica L. Slawter, Quakertown; and Christina M. Snyder, Lebanon.

Albert, Brouse, Dickey, Hall, Hanmer, Mayo, Reilly, Reiver, Slawter and Thorne are enrolled in the landscape/horticulture technology: landscape emphasis major. Hammes, Henderson, Mueller, Nyer and Snyder are majoring in landscape/horticulture technology: plant production emphasis.
