Fall’s Athletics Success Smoothly Changes Seasons

Vol. 8, No. 14 (Through Sunday, Nov. 15)

Wildcat Tales Pennsylvania College of Technology basketball teams got off to good starts in their home openers against Central Pennsylvania College. The men won, 102-96, and the women were victorious, 74-45.

Flashback Men’s Basketball In their opener, Leroy Joiner (Williamsport) scored 27 points and hauled in 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits for the Wildcats were Greg Solyak (Lititz), with 25; Joe Simon (Renovo), with 19; and Nico Italiani (Easton), 12. During the game’s last 41 seconds, Joiner and Italiani each hit two free throws to seal the win.

Women’s Basketball Kelsey Mack (Douglassville) poured in 32 points; Dani Trout (Harrisburg), 13; and Jess Hohman (South Williamsport), 11, as the Wildcats romped in their opener. Hohman and Abigayle MacDonald (Red Lion) each had 11 rebounds. On Sunday, at NCAA Division II Lock Haven University, Penn College fell behind 41-19 at halftime and suffered its first loss of the campaign. Hohman scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Mack scored 13 and pulled down five caroms.

Fall Sports The fall sports season proved to be another success story, as seven teams posted a combined won-loss-tied mark of 147-54-3, a .731 winning percentage.

The coed tennis team went 17-1 and won its second straight Penn State University Athletic Conference championship, the women’s soccer team went 8-4-1 and tied for third place nationally in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, the men’s soccer team went 15-5-1 and finished second in the PSUAC and tied for fourth in the USCAA, the men’s cross-country team went 54-14 and won its fifth consecutive PSUAC crown while finishing second in the USCAA, the women’s cross-country team went 21-13-1 and finished second in the PSUAC and fifth in the USCAA, the women’s volleyball team went 15-10 and reached the PSUAC semifinals, and the golf team went 20-7 and finished third in the PSUAC and fourth in the USCAA.

On the Horizon Basketball The Wildcats step up this week, as both the men and women take on NCAA Division III opponents. On Tuesday, the women travel to crosstown rival Lycoming College, while the men host King’s College. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday, both teams are competing in tournaments at Susquehanna University. The men step into action against host Susquehanna at 8 p.m. Friday, after Wilkes University faces Elizabethtown College at 6 p.m. The consolation game is at 1 p.m. Saturday and the championship follows at 3 p.m.

The women also open play in the tournament against host Susquehanna at 8 p.m. Saturday, after Misericordia University and Shenandoah University clash at 6 p.m. The women’s consolation game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday and the championship at 3 p.m.
