Faculty Members Participate in Sociological Society Conference

Vinay Bahl, associate professor of sociology at Pennsylvania College of Technology, recently organized a panel discussion at the Pennsylvania Sociological Society’s annual conference.

Bahl also served as a panelist for the discussion, which was titled “Impact of Technology, Assessment, Student Evaluation, and Administrative Class Observation on Undergraduate Teaching in the USA.”

She was joined on the panel by Penn College faculty members Craig A. Miller, assistant professor of history and political science, and Richard Sahn, instructor of psychology and sociology.

The panelists evaluated how issues of technology, assessment, student evaluations and administrative class observation have impacted teaching methods, syllabi, class management, student learning, and the expectations of students, teachers and administrators. They also discussed how all these issues are fulfilling the larger goal of higher learning.

The annual meeting was held Oct. 12-13 at Penn State Schuylkill. The society has served Pennsylvania sociology faculty, students, researchers and other professionals for 62 years.

Bahl has taught sociology at Penn College since 1996. She holds a doctorate from the State University of New York at Binghamton. In 2002-03, she was a visiting scholar to the College de France, Paris. She was a visiting scholar at Amsterdam’s International Institute of Asian Studies in 2004.

She has published three books (one co-edited) and many articles on subjects that include industrialization, the working class, the caste system, the women’s movement, music, South Asian women’s clothes and Third World women.
