A Pennsylvania College of Technology professor of industrial and human factors design wrote an article, “Ergonomics at Sea,” published in two international publications: the October 2015 issue of Maritime Reporter and Engineering News and The Nautical Institute’s International Maritime Human Element Bulletin, Issue No. 38.
Thomas E. Ask’s article explores ergonomics – the science of designing for the human body – and its designs for maritime applications, which require their own special attention due to the sizable, hazardous equipment being operated in water, as well as environmental and multicultural factors.
Maritime Reporter and Engineering News was established in 1939 and is the world’s largest circulation maritime magazine. The Nautical Institute is an international organization with more than 7,000 maritime professionals in 115 countries.
Ask is the author of Reeds Marine Surveying, part of the Reeds Professional series. Now in its second edition, the publication is used by students of marine surveying, professional marine surveyors, boatyard operators and technically minded boat owners.
A licensed professional engineer, Ask has taught at Penn College for 14 years. He holds a doctorate in industrial design from Middlesex University, a graduate management certificate from Cornell University, a Master of Arts in liberal studies from Excelsior College and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.
Penn College’s industrial and human factors design major is an interdisciplinary study of design that prepares students to become designers of marketable products and systems.
