Faculty Member Presents Paper at International Conference

A faculty member in Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Business and Computer Technologies presented a research paper at the 2009 World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Applied Computing, recently held in Las Vegas.
Daniel W. Yoas, an associate professor of computer information technology, presented "Hashing as a Method of Preventing SQL Injection During Data Retrieval," at WORLDCOMP'09 (July 13-16), the largest annual gathering of researchers in computer science, computer engineering and applied computing.
In his paper, he showed that, while Structured Query Language attacks (code injections) are a serious threat to database management exploiting the security and vulnerability of the system appropriate use of "hashing" techniques can ease a programmer's efforts to protect databases from such problems.
Yoas earned a master's degree from Rochester Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. He is pursuing a doctorate in computer information systems with a concentration in information security at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He travels to classes four times a year and expects to complete his course work and begin his dissertation in Spring 2011.
The paper was the product of his Research in Secure Systems Analysis class. Other course work has included Network Security, Secure System Analysis and Design, Software Engineering, Data Communications, Privacy, Research in Privacy, and Decision Support Systems.
