The department head in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s applied health studies major recently returned from England, where she presented new recommendations for palliative care.
Tina M. Evans, associate professor of applied health studies, was lead author for a paper titled “Palliative Care: A global development update, challenges and policy recommendations.” Palliative care serves to treat symptoms, discomfort and stress caused by a serious illness. The paper provided a systematic review of the palliative model of health care and global trends in palliative care, and offered recommendations to improve this specific sector of the medical system.
Evans was selected to present the paper, along with coauthors David R. Betts, of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, and Fevzi Akinci, of King’s College, at the International Conference on Healthcare Systems and Global Business Issues. The conference was held at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England.
As part of the conference, Evans toured various health care facilities and medical teaching/learning facilities in Grantham, Nottingham and London.
Evans, of Kingston, holds a doctorate in health promotion from Marywood University, where she also earned a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. She earned her master’s degree in health care administration from King’s College.
Penn College’s Bachelor of Science in applied health studies is a degree-completion program for individuals who are certified or soon-to-be certified, licensed or registered in a health care profession. It is designed to prepare practitioners to function in a dynamic health care environment, enabling students to build on current knowledge and skills to assume positions of leadership. The major is available online and is self-paced and flexible.
