The Gallery at Penn College

A celebration of the diversity and quality of regional art will be hosted by The Gallery at Penn College with its Regional Juried Exhibition 2018, set for May 29 through July 27.

Showcasing 63 creative pieces by 51 artists representing 35 Pennsylvania cities and towns, the exhibition includes a reception set for Sunday, June 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the gallery, located on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Madigan Library. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

The fine art display features work by emerging and established contemporary artists. An open-themed exhibition, the show highlights recent work in a variety of styles and media by artists residing within 100 miles of Williamsport. Among the mediums included are: metal, stoneware, textile, photography, printmaking, mixed media, and paintings in oil, watercolor, acrylic, and pen and ink.

Juror of selection was V. Scott Dimond, curator for visual arts, Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. Juror of awards is Ann Piper, visual artist and associate professor of art and design at Susquehanna University.

Dimond says the show reflects “what I feel are the fundamental purposes of art: to inspire wonder and to make the world a more beautiful place than it was before.”

Penny Griffin Lutz, gallery director, said: “The Gallery at Penn College’s first regional juried exhibition in 2013 was open to Lycoming County artists. Expanding the reach of the 2018 exhibit to a 100-mile radius drew a great mix of both familiar and unfamiliar artists, and the number of entries we received was exciting and also overwhelming. I’m thankful to V. Scott Dimond for the time he spent selecting the pieces to be included, and I think visitors will be interested to see the range of work.”

The Gallery at Penn College’s summer exhibit hours are: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. (The gallery will be closed July 1-4, as well as Saturdays and Mondays.)

In addition to serving as an educational resource for Penn College students and a cultural asset to the college and community, the gallery is dedicated to promoting art appreciation through exhibitions of contemporary art.
