ESL Program Offers Citizenship, Language Instruction

An English as a Second Language program, comprising four noncredit courses to prepare interested students for successful participation in their communities, will be offered during the fall semester by Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

The ESL instruction, designed to help students with little or no English proficiency to gain basic language skills, is geared toward those who will be entering the local workforce or who are spouses/family members of international students or people working in or relocating to the area. They will focus on communication in essential situations, such as looking for an apartment, shopping and obtaining medical care.



The courses – all of which feature small-class sizes, high standards and a supportive environment – are:

American Citizenship
Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 22 to Oct. 22
4 to 6 p.m.

The proper tools for success in becoming an American citizen will be discussed. Participants can understand more about American history and culture by studying the nine major topics that may be included on the citizenship exam: Principles of American Democracy, System of Government, Rights and Responsibilities, Colonial Period and Independence, 1800s, Recent American History, Geography, Symbols and Holidays. Assistance in completing the N-400 Application for Naturalization will also be available. There is a fee of $254 for the course.

ESL: An Introduction to English A
Mondays through Thursdays, Aug. 24 to Sept. 24
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays
The course is designed to introduce basic English grammar, specifically simple and progressive tenses. Conversational listening-and speaking-skill exercises geared toward beginners will be practiced during the class, for which there is a $759 cost.

ESL: An Introduction to English B
Mondays through Thursdays, Sept. 28 to Oct. 29
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays
The course is designed to continue the grammar skills introduced in ESL: Introduction to English A. Students will be instructed to use grammar structures to speak and write complete, more complex statements and questions. The cost is $679.

ESL: An Introduction to English C
Mondays through Thursdays, Nov. 2 to Dec. 3 (no class Nov. 26 and 30)
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays
The course is designed to continue the grammar skills introduced in ESL: Introduction to English A and B. Students will be instructed to use grammar structures to speak and write complete, more complex statements and questions. There is a $619 fee for the course.
