Eleven Hospitality Students Selected to Assist at Ryder Cup

Eleven Pennsylvania College of Technology students have been selected to help prepare food and serve guests at the 2008 Ryder Cup, the biennial matchup between the top United States and European golfers.

The students, enrolled in the college’s culinary arts and systems and the baking and pastry arts majors, will travel to the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., where they will work with chefs from Levy Restaurants to feed 5,000 people during the match’s Sept. 18 opening ceremony. For the remainder of the tournament, which runs through Sept. 21, the students will work on the golf course in one or more corporate hospitality “chalets” to serve some of the tournament’s 30,000 spectators.

The students will be accompanied by Chef Paul Mach, assistant professor of hospitality management/culinary arts.

“I expect that the food production is going to be very high quality and that there are going to be very busy times,” Mach said, explaining that spectators will use the opportunity when golfers are playing holes not near the corporate tents to eat and watch the tournament on closed-circuit television. “It’s going to require the students to be very flexible and pay attention to detail.”

Students making the trip are Jeffrey S. Byron, of Milford, Conn.; Scott A. Fowler, of Williamsport; Lisa Greenberg, of New City, N.Y.; Russell J. Hackenburg, of Pittsburgh; Kayla M. Keever, of Mechanicsburg; Kyle Kishbaugh, of Nescopek; and Jacqueline A. Lovecchio, of Dallas, all pursuing bachelor’s degrees in culinary arts and systems, and Callie L. Chalmers, of Galeton; Akacia Klick, of Kingston; Allyson J. Roan, of Pennsylvania Furnace; and Ashley M. Wolf, of South Williamsport, all pursuing degrees in baking and pastry arts.
