A new scholarship fund at Pennsylvania College of Technology honors the memory of the founder of a Berks County construction and design firm.

The agreement to establish the Dwight E. Stoltzfus Memorial Trade Scholarship at Penn College was recently completed by Stoltzfus' widow, Kay, and their son Nicholas.

Dwight Stoltzfus died in December 2004. He was the founder of DESCCO Design and Construction Co., Fleetwood.

Under the scholarship agreement, a $500 award will be made each year, beginning with students enrolled for the Fall 2006 semester at Penn College.

The award will be made to a full- or part-time student in one of the following majors: (associate degrees) building construction technology; electric power generation technology; heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology; landscaping/nursery technology; and heavy construction equipment technology; or (certificate programs) cabinetmaking and millwork; construction carpentry; electrical occupations; plumbing; diesel technician; machinist general; and welding.

Preference will be given to students who meet the scholarship selection criteria and who are:

  • dependents of DESCCO Design and Construction Co. employees
  • members of the First Assembly of God, Hamburg
  • residents of Berks or Schuylkill counties
  • nontraditional students with children

Kay and Nicholas Stoltzfus held the first Dwight Stoltzfus Memorial Golf Tournament in the fall of 2005 to raise funds for the scholarship. The family plans to continue holding the golf tournaments to raise funds and eventually endow the scholarship, making it a permanent source of awards to students at Penn College. The next Dwight Stoltzfus Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 22 at the Golden Oaks Country Club, Fleetwood.

"Dwight held in high regard people that worked with their hands," said Kay Stoltzfus. "This scholarship is an appropriate way to imprint his standard of quality on the building trades that will last for generations to come."
