Donation Supports SMART Girls, Penn College NOW Programs

Miller, director of corporate relations at Pennsylvania College of Technology.Waste Management Inc. is supporting Pennsylvania College of Technology's SMART Girls and Penn College NOW programs through a donation under the state's Educational Improvement Tax Credit program.

Waste Management presented a check for $10,000 to the Penn College Foundation, which was recently approved as an educational improvement organization under the EITC program administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

The designation means approved businesses may make contributions to the foundation to support the two eligible programs at Penn College, which are considered "innovative educational programs" under the law and receive educational improvement tax credits from the state. Both programs are managed by the Outreach for K-12 Office at Penn College.

SMART (Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies) Girls addresses the academic and social trend of girls shying away from math and the sciences as they enter high school by giving girls in grades seven to 11 the opportunity to experience math and science as a foundation for careers in technology.

Penn College NOW allows high school students to earn Penn College credits through dual enrollment courses taught by approved high school teachers at the students' home high schools or career and technology centers. Twenty-four schools around the state participate in Penn College NOW.
