Dean of Hospitality at Penn College Earns Doctorate

The dean of hospitality at Pennsylvania College of Technology recently completed a doctorate in hotel, restaurant and institutional management from The Pennsylvania State University.

Frederick W. Becker defended his dissertation: “The impact of fun in the workplace on experienced fun, work engagement, constituent attachment, and turnover among entry-level workers in the hospitality industry.”

Becker joined the faculty at Penn College in 1994 and served as the School of Hospitality’s department head before being named dean of the school in 2003.



Frederick W. BeckerHe holds an associate degree in hotel and restaurant management from Paul Smith’s College, a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management from the University of Denver, and a Master of Arts in leadership studies from Plattsburgh State University.

He has held management positions with Days Inns of America and at the Hotel Saranac of Paul Smith’s College. At Paul Smith’s, he was promoted from front office supervisor to program coordinator, while earning faculty rank of assistant professor.

Becker is a member of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education. He has served as an accreditation evaluator for the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration and for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
