Crime Alert: Students Report Being Swindled

A Pennsylvania College of Technology student reported being swindled overnight by a black male in his late 30s at an off-campus apartment. This is the seventh known occurrence by the same or a similar suspect. The incidents are being investigated by the Williamsport Bureau of Police.
The man usually has persuaded students to give him money by knocking on off-campus apartment doors and asking for a ride home. During the ride, he asks if change can be made for $100 bills for which he, in turn, will give the student an additional $50. The students have then gone to a 24-hour bank machine to withdraw money for the change. The man then says he will need to be taken home so that his wife can get the money owed. He then leaves the car and does not return.
Students should immediately contact Williamsport Police or Penn College Police by dialing 911 if they come into contact with this person.
All students, faculty and staff should be alert for suspicious persons and potentially dangerous situations on and off campus. Be security-conscious, and keep doors locked at all times. At night, walk on well-lit sidewalks and walkways. Park as close as possible to any buildings you intend to enter. If possible, walk with another person. Call Penn College Police for an escort to any on-campus destination, if needed. All crimes should be reported immediately to the police.
