A Pennsylvania College of Technology construction student from Gettysburg is among just two dozen national winners of a Centex "Build Your Future" scholarship.

Corwyn K. Smith, entering his second year in the college's building construction technology associate-degree major, was awarded $3,000 from the National Housing Endowment (the philanthropic arm of the National Association of Home Builders). The fund, created by Centex Corp., provides tuition assistance to undergraduate and graduate students nationwide who are pursuing careers in the building industry.

"Corwyn has been an excellent student academically; faculty describe him as "˜quiet, attentive and professional, regularly exceeding expectations,'" said Tom F. Gregory, dean of construction and design technologies. "We have had a relationship with Centex for many years that has benefited our students and the construction programs, and we are certainly glad to see that our students can take advantage of their generosity to help defray the rising costs of education."

The endowment administers 12 scholarship funds and awards more than $350,000 each year to students pursuing careers in residential construction and related fields. Since the "Build Your Future" scholarship was founded in 1999, Centex has awarded more than $200,000 to 115 exemplary students attending such programs across the country.
