College to Host Governor's Institute for Math Teachers

Pennsylvania College of Technology will host the Pennsylvania Governor's Institute for Mathematics Educators on July 26-30.
The state Department of Education runs the institute, which is open to K-12 mathematics educators from public, private and charter schools throughout Pennsylvania. This is the third year Penn College has hosted the institute.
The institute focuses on state academic standards in math, each year targeting an area in which students statewide have not performed well, according to Dr. Jeannette L. Fraser, director of Penn College's Outreach for K-12 office, which organizes the event at the College.
She said the institute tries to remedy weaknesses in what instructors know, increasing their knowledge of the content they teach. She said the teachers who attend the institute take a pre-test during their first day on campus, and then take the same test before they leave to measure the amount they have learned.
Teachers are grouped together according to the grade they teach, and, at the end of the week, the teachers working in teams create a lesson plan that addresses the subject they studied.
Fraser said nearly 100 teachers are expected to attend the weeklong institute, which follows another Governor's Institute event for math teachers the week before at Millersville University.
