College to Host 'SMART Girls' Event for Middle School Students

On April 4, Pennsylvania College of Technology will host a session for girls in seventh and eighth grades to encourage their continued interest in science and math.
The college's SMART Girls (Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies) project was developed to counter the alarming tendency of girls to shy away from math and sciences as they enter adolescence. The program offers a slate of hands-on activities to show the real-life values of math and science in the career world.
The April 4 event includes such topics as network programming, exercise physiology, emergency medicine, water pollution and groundwater flow, architectural modeling, Web-page creation, forensic chemistry, automated manufacturing, stone-wall construction, mathematical graphing, and creating video clips.
The cost for the daylong event, which is open to the first 40 girls who register, is $25.
