College to defend Community Cup in Saturday's benefit trail races

There’s still time to sign up for the 2019 Community Challenge, featuring 5K, 10K and half-marathon trail races set for Saturday, Nov. 9. The event raises funds for the Salvation Army of Williamsport, which assists about 400 area families each month.
Runners, hikers and walkers are encouraged to sign up by 11:59 a.m. Wednesday at the registration site, where participants can elect to join the Pennsylvania College of Technology team. Donations are also accepted at the site, where donors can assign funding to a specific team member.
About 385 participants from eight states have joined the effort so far.
“Based on my calculations, the event has raised more than $75,000 over the past five years for our community members in need,” said Michael J. Reed, vice president for academic affairs/provost. An active organizer and participant in the Community Challenge, Reed has served as vice chairman of the local Salvation Army Advisory Board.
The Community Challenge raises funds to support the organization’s tutoring, mentoring, food distribution, and financial planning and budgeting courses. In addition, proceeds help families provide a gift for their children during the December holiday season.
This year, a small donation will be given to Penn College’s Veteran and Military Services, supporting all student veterans and military students. Members of the college’s ROTC program and the student veterans fraternity, Omega Delta Sigma, are helping out with the 2019 Community Challenge and will be on hand Saturday to assist participants.
For the third year in a row, Penn College ceramics instructors David A. and Deborah L. Stabley are handcrafting ceramic trophies and other race awards. For the past two years, Penn College has captured the Community Cup, an award presented to the organization with the greatest participation at the event. The college is a sponsor of the nonprofit endeavor.
