College Receives Grant to Combat Underage, High-Risk Alcohol Use

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has awarded an $11,500 grant to Pennsylvania College of Technology to help the college prevent underage and high-risk alcohol use by students.
The Penn College grant was among $700,000 in funds awarded to 65 organizations statewide. Since 1999, the PLCB has awarded grants totaling $3,032,220 to 210 entities.
The Penn College grant funds are earmarked for a variety of programs and activities:
Continued funding for the College and Community Coalition, which was established in 1999 to address underage and dangerous drinking by Penn College students
- Maintenance of the college's BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) program
- The Responsible Alcohol Management Program (RAMP) for students enrolled in hospitality programs
- Assessment of student alcohol use and behaviors through the CORE drug and alcohol survey
- Increased enforcement of campus policies and local, state and/or federal laws
"The marriage of education, enforcement and community cooperation is what makes this grant effective," said Jennifer McLean, director of counseling, career and disability services at Penn College. "These collective efforts build a culture that is supportive of personal responsibility and emphasizes accountability for one's actions."
"Promoting not only personal responsibility, but responsibility within the wider community, is a big part of what this program is about," McLean added. "The PLCB has again demonstrated its support of Penn College's efforts to promote responsibility with regard to alcohol use."
