College Approved as Continuing-Education Provider for Nursing

Pennsylvania College of Technology was recently approved by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association to offer continuing-education courses in nursing, which will help provide local opportunities for registered nurses to meet new state requirements for continuing education.

The college was approved by the association’s Continuing Education Committee’s Reviewer Unit for the next three years through Oct. 11, 2009 to award contact hours to registered nurses participating in its continuing nursing education activities.

“The passage by the state of Pennsylvania of the 30-hour biennial continuing-education requirement for RN licensure renewal challenges the local nursing community in terms of access and affordability,” said Jane J. Benedict, associate professor of nursing. “In an effort to meet the continuing-education needs of the local nursing community, the Penn College nursing program partnered with the college’s Workforce Development & Continuing Education Office to attain Pennsylvania State Nurses Association provider status.”

Penn College’s first Pennsylvania State Nurses Association-approved offering, a session on “Perspectives in Palliative Care,” took place on campus in early November.

“Penn College’s nursing program is pleased to be able to provide nurses the opportunity to attend quality, professional continuing education in the region, which is approved by Pennsylvania State Nurses Association,” said Kathie Morr, dean of health sciences at the college. “This approval assures the professional that they are attending continuing-education programs of high quality and appropriate for the profession.”

The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association serves as the official voice of registered nurses in the commonwealth and focuses on legislative, practice, regulatory, professional, advocacy and education issues that affect today’s nurses.
