"Introduction to Steel-Joist Products," a free presentation by a civil engineer, will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium.

The presenter will be Kevin W. Smith, engineering manager of CMC Joist and Deck, New Columbia, a division of Commercial Metals Co. A registered professional engineer and American Welding Society-certified inspector, Smith holds civil engineering degrees from Kansas State University (master's) and The Pennsylvania State University (bachelor's).

Robert A. Wozniak, an associate professor of architectural technology, said the lecture is geared toward architectural, engineering, construction, construction management and welding students, but anyone with an interest in steel construction is welcome to attend. Smith will present a brief introduction to his firm and to the industry in general, then discuss the job process start to finish along with examples from each phase (sales, detailing, engineering, fabrication and installation).

Information also will be presented about employment opportunities and requirements, Wozniak said.
