Cheng/Garban Scholarships Open to Children of Penn College Employees


The Office of Student Aid at Penn State-University Park has two scholarship opportunities available to the children of full-time staff at Pennsylvania College of Technology: The Steve A. Garban Grant-In-Aid Scholarship (named fora former member of the Penn College Board of Directors), and the Irene Cheng Memorial Award.

Irene Cheng Memorial Award The Irene Cheng Memorial Award was established by the friends and family of Irene Cheng, a former employee of Audio-Visual Services, to honor and recognize outstanding achievement by undergraduate students.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student who is enrolled at any Penn State campus or at Penn College
  • Must be a child of a MediaTech (Media Services) employee or a full-time undergraduate student who has been employed by MediaTech (Media Services) for at least one year and currently works a minimum of10 hours per week
  • Distinguished achievement, a combination of academic merit and the quality of community and/or university involvement, is a primary criterion
  • Prior applicants and award recipients will be considered again
  • Children of MediaTech (Media Services) employees and applicants who have not previously received the scholarship will be given first preference
  • Must have a cumulativegrade-point averageof 3.0 or better.

Award$1,200 for the 2009-10 academic year.

Application InformationTo apply, please submit the following:

  • Your name
  • Your Penn State or Penn College ID number
  • Parent/employee’s name or MediaTech (Media Services) supervisor’s name
  • Two-page “letter of application,” describing your outstanding achievements and indicate why you should be selected for the Irene Cheng Memorial Award

The application deadline is April 29. The award recipient will be selected by the Office of Student Aid Scholarship Committee and approved by the Dean of Libraries and Scholarly Communications. All applicants will be notified in May. ____________________________________________________

Steve A. Garban Grant-In-Aid If you are a child of a full-time Penn State or Penn College technical service or staff employee, you are invited to apply for the Steve A. Garban Grant-In-Aid. Eligible students must be offered admission as first-year, full-time students at any Penn State campus or at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, must have demonstrated leadership and humanitarian qualities through extracurricular activities during high school, and must have achieved or show promise of achieving academic success.

This grant-in-aid, awarded to one first-year student, is intended to assist with room and board charges for two years, provided the student continues full-time enrollment at Penn State or Penn College, incurs room and board charges, and demonstrates academic success.

Application InformationTo apply, please submit a letter that includes all of the following:

  • Your name
  • Your Penn State or Penn College ID number
  • Penn State or Penn College employee’s name and position
  • A personal essay of no more than two typewritten pages that gives examples of your leadership skills and your humanitarian and academic merits

The application deadline is April 30. The award recipient will be selected by the Office of Student Aid Scholarship Committee and announced in May. All applicants will be notified. ____________________________________________________
