Culinary Students Add Flavor to National Science Festival

Students and faculty from Pennsylvania College of Technology’s School of Business & Hospitality served a “Taste of Technology” at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C., from April 15-17. From frozen Teddy Grahams to instant ice cream, the students fed guests’ curiosity and appetite. With other exhibitors and science celebrities, the Penn College culinary contingent promoted careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). A video has been added to the college’s YouTube channel, and a photo gallery compiled from the contributions of faculty and staff.

Chemistry Professor Published in Research Journal

Kelly B. Butzler, associate professor of chemistry at Pennsylvania College of Technology, had a paper published in an international journal’s special issue focused on “Flipping the Classroom.”

The current issue of Computers in the Schools: Interdisciplinary Journal of Practice, Theory, and Applied Research features Butzler’s article, “The Synergistic Effects of Self-Regulation Tools and the Flipped Classroom.”

Butzler is an educational advocate for “flipped classrooms” – a blended learning approach to standard classrooms. Flipped classrooms move lectures online, outside of class, and move assignments into the classroom where teachers can provide guidance and answer questions.

Penn College to Exhibit at Nation’s Largest Science Festival

Chef Frank M. Suchwala, associate professor of hospitality management/culinary arts, and baking and pastry arts majors Jeffrey L. Bretz, of Williamsport, and Keegan D. Sonney, of Erie, practice one of the demonstrations for “A Taste of Technology” that they will present for Penn College at the USA Science and Engineering Festival.

Pennsylvania College of Technology representatives will present “A Taste of Technology” for thousands of people hungry to experience STEM fields at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C., April 15-17.

Led by faculty and students from the School of Business & Hospitality, Penn College representatives will offer hands-on activities for participants to discover the science, technology, engineering and math involved in food preparation.

“We want people to experience aspects of STEM beyond the classroom and in all areas of life,” said Chef Frank M. Suchwala, associate professor of hospitality management/culinary arts and creator of A Taste of Technology. “Specifically, we can show how food can be created and presented in innovative ways using STEM to our advantage.”

Biology Professor Helps Shape Students’ Futures

A biology professor at Pennsylvania College of Technology who specializes in brain research was an appropriate participant for the topic “Shaping Your Brain for the Future” – the theme of the second annual STEM Awareness Career Day held recently at Wellsboro Area High School’s administration building.

Justin M. Ingram, assistant professor of biology (anatomy and physiology), spoke with approximately 500 eighth-graders from all three Tioga County school districts – Northern Tioga, Southern Tioga and Wellsboro – and showed the students objects including human brains.

The Journal of Chemical Education has published a paper written by Kelly B. Butzler, associate professor of chemistry at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

The paper, “Flipping at an Open-Enrollment College,” was featured in a special 2015 edition of the journal focused on “flipped classrooms.”

Biology Professor Publishes International Resources

David L. Evans

David L. Evans, recently retired professor of biology (anatomy and physiology) at Pennsylvania College of Technology, has added publications to his long list of educational resources used by professors around the world.

Evans coauthored an instructors’ resource contained in “Biology of Humans: Concepts, Applications and Issues” (Fifth Edition), a test bank for human biology published by Goodenough/McGuire. His coauthor for the resource was Mark A. Sarvary, director of Investigative Biology Laboratories at Cornell University.

Services Tuesday for Retired ‘Master Teacher’

Services will be Tuesday for Dr. William B. Urosevich, retired professor of biology (anatomy and physiology) and a 2008 Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award recipient, who died Wednesday, May 6, in Lewisburg. Dr. Urosevich, who began his full-time teaching career at Penn College in 1993, was also a recipient of the college’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 1997. He was an adjunct instructor before joining the faculty full-time, and he also served as adviser to the Wildcat Power Team. He retired in August 2010. He received a doctor of optometry degree with clinical honors from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Philadelphia, and a Master of Science in system management from the University of Southern California. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wilkes University, and was a graduate of the U.S. Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. A visitation/viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, May 12, at Rooke Chapel, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, followed by services and burial from noon to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be directed to the Dr. William B. Urosevich Memorial Scholarship Fund, Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation, One College Avenue, Williamsport, PA 17701.

Geology, Environmental Science Faculty Member Earns Doctorate

Veronica C. Ciavarella

Veronica C. Ciavarella, instructor of geology and environmental science at Pennsylvania College of Technology, recently received her doctorate of education in adult education from Penn State.

Focused on distance education and, specifically, the use of labs in online geology courses, Ciavarella defended her dissertation, “Exploratory Qualitative Case Study of Lab-Type Activity Interactions in an Online Geoscience Course.”

Faculty Member to Review Book by Next Presenter in Colloquia Series

David S. Richards

David S. Richards, a professor of physics at Penn College, will discuss Alan Lightman’s “Einstein’s Dreams” during an on-campus reprise of his recent James V. Brown Book Review Luncheon at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Mountain Laurel Room of the Thompson Professional Development Center. The international best-seller is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Einstein in 1905, when he worked in a Swiss patent office. The author explores how the lives of ordinary people in Switzerland would be changed in the various realities of time imagined by Einstein as he develops his theory of relativity. Richards’ review offers a timely introduction to Lightman – a theoretical physicist, educator, novelist and essayist – the next speaker in the college’s Centennial Colloquia Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium.

Kelly Bieda Butzler, associate professor of chemistry at Pennsylvania College of Technology, recently received her doctorate of education, specializing in e-learning, from Northcentral University, an accredited online university based in Arizona.

Butzler defended her dissertation, “The Effects of Motivation on Achievement and Satisfaction in a Flipped Classroom Learning Environment.”

A Pennsylvania College of Technology chemistry faculty member recently presented her innovative teaching methods in an online conference featuring international participants and attendees.

Kelly B. Butzler, associate professor of chemistry, presented “Flipped at an Open-Enrollment College” during an Online ConfChem conference focused on the “flipped classroom” and hosted by the American Chemical Society’s Division of Chemical Education’s Committee on Computers in Chemical Education. Butzler’s presentation also included a weeklong discussion about her paper.

A “flipped classroom” is a blended learning approach to a standard classroom; it moves lectures online, outside of class, and moves assignments into the classroom where teachers can provide guidance and answer questions.

A Pennsylvania College of Technology chemistry faculty member and two students were invited speakers recently at the Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology.

Kelly B. Butzler, associate professor of chemistry; Meghan C. Cunningham, a sophomore in individual studies from Williamsport; and Brian M. McKeon Jr., a freshman in general studies from Trout Run, co-presented a session titled “Flipping the Classroom: Is it Worth the Hype?”

A “flipped classroom” is a blended learning approach to a standard classroom. The presentation offered perspectives on teaching and learning in a variety of courses, how students and teachers perceive a flipped classroom, and how the flexible approach affects students’ learning outcomes.
