Campus Events Aim to Raise Breast-Cancer Awareness


Self-examination and a campus speaker are planned by Penn College’s Student Health Services in observance of October’s designation as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”

Self-ExaminationAre you up to this challenge? It could very well save your life. By taking the breast self exam challenge sponsored by Student Health Services, you can raise your awareness and win one of three Sheetz gift cards valued at $25 each.

Campus events aim to raise breast-cancer awarenessDo you know that 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year alone? A total of 43,300 women will die fighting breast cancer this year. Breast Cancer does not only affect women 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 400 men will die from the disease.

All are invited: men, women, students and faculty.

The challenge will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the following dates and locations:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 6, Outside Susquehanna Room
  • Tuesday, Oct. 12, ATHS Lobby
  • Thursday, Oct. 21, ACC Wrapture Area
  • Monday Oct. 25, CC Lobby

Banquet Speaker “Breast Cancer Prevention Beyond Early Detection” is the topic for a dinner event to be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in Le Jeune Chef Restaurant.

Dr. Timothy J. Pagana, medical director of the Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center, is the scheduled speaker.

The event is sponsored by Penn College Student Health Services and GlaxoSmithKline; dinner and a raffle entry are included in the $25 cost. Reservations are accepted through Oct. 15 by calling (570) 320-5234 or by sending an e-mail to Carl L. Shaner, student health center director.
