'Cat Tales Baseball Pennsylvania College of Technology won three of four games as it opened its season at Westmoreland County Community College.

"We were hitting the ball well. I knew scoring wasn't going to be a problem," coach Chris Howard said. Howard also was pleased with the pitching (just four of the 18 runs it allowed were earned), but said his team's defense was a "little shaky" at times.

"Our defensive lapses were mental, not physical, and that can be corrected," the coach said. "We just need to cut down on our mental mistakes."

Mark Shaffer (junior/Hanover) and John Vitovsky (senior/Waymart) earned pitching wins in the first two games, respectively. Shaffer finished with five strikeouts and Vitovsky with four. Freshman PJ Horn had five strikeouts during five innings of relief work in the third game.

Hitting leaders during the weekend included Devon Liquori (senior/Hawley), Phil Woodring (senior/Waynesboro), Matt Mientus (sophomore/Macungie) and Dane Glick (sophomore/Belleview). Liquori had a two-run homer in the first game and drove in four runs.
