Barbour to Visit With Area Nittany Lion Club on June 24

Penn State Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour is scheduled to speak at the Williamsport Area Nittany Lion Booster Club’s monthly meeting, set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at The Genetti Hotel in Williamsport.

Nearing 10 months directing Penn State’s 31-sport program, Barbour will speak about her first year in Happy Valley, her vision and plans for the future, and answer questions at the meeting, which is free and open to the public.



Sandy BarbourBarbour began her leadership of the Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics program on Aug. 18, 2014, and has quickly made a strong impression on one of the nation’s most successful and comprehensive athletic departments. President Eric J. Barron named Barbour the Nittany Lions’ ninth director of athletics after she served 10 years in a similar position at the University of California.

Barbour brought to Penn State more than 30 years of varied experiences as a collegiate administrator and coach, with a demonstrated record of championships, academic success, innovation, facility modernization and revenue growth. A Wake Forest graduate and student-athlete, she directs Penn State’s broad-based program that supports approximately 800 student-athletes and an Intercollegiate Athletics staff of more than 300.

Penn State Athletics boasts an NCAA graduation success rate of 89 percent, 74 national championships and 92 Big Ten titles all-time. Under Barbour’s leadership, 20 Penn State teams have competed in their respective NCAA Championships in 2014-15, in addition to the football team winning the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, and 30 teams have participated in postseason competition this year.

Penn State is ranked No. 3 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings entering the final month of 2014-15. The Nittany Lions won the 2014 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship and earned Big Ten titles in men’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer this year. In addition, three Penn State student-athletes have won individual NCAA Championships, and eight Nittany Lions will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships from June 10-13.
