Assault Suspect in Custody


A man accused of a Tuesday assault of a Penn College student with whom he was acquainted was taken into custody by Penn College Police and the U.S. Marshal’s office around 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Maryland/Pennsylvania border. David Smith was arraigned before a district justice and committed to the Lycoming County Prison. Smith is charged with assault, attempted kidnapping, robbery, motor vehicle theft and receiving stolen property. The student, assaulted on campus at 11 a.m. in the parking lot west of College Avenue Labs, was treated and released from the hospital early in the afternoon. The victim’s vehicle, stolen from the scene, was recovered several miles from campus.
