Alumnus Endows Second Scholarship at Penn College

Jeff Erdly, CEO of Masonry Preservation Services Inc. and a 1972 engineering drafting graduate of Pennsylvania College of Technology predecessor Williamsport Area Community College, has endowed a second scholarship at the college.
The Jeff Erdly Scholarship will provide award preferences to Penn College full-time students who have graduated from Selinsgrove Area High School and are enrolled in any major. Second preference will be given to Penn College students who have a home residence in Snyder County.
In October, Erdly, a 2004 recipient of Penn College’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, made a presentation to students of the School of Construction & Design Technologies titled “Just Another Brick in the Wall? A Building Science Education-Its Value to Society, and a Road Map to Building Your Career.”
“I have been very fortunate to have had some success in a field that I am passionate about,” Erdly said. “The preservation of buildings is one way to leave a legacy. The creation of this scholarship is another. Hopefully, I can help future Penn College students receive the foundational education I received.”
“We are extremely grateful to Jeff for establishing his second named scholarship to benefit Penn College students as part of the Penn College Scholarship Campaign,” said Robb Dietrich, executive director of the Penn College Foundation. “It is especially gratifying when our alumni give back to the institution so generously because they attribute at least a small part of their success to the education they received while at Penn College or one of its predecessor institutions.”
Erdly also endowed the Carl and Bonnie Erdly Memorial Scholarship in memory of his parents in 2011. The award preferences for that scholarship are students who are enrolled full time, who are enrolled in any program at Penn College; and who have a home residence in either Columbia, Northumberland, Snyder or Union counties.
Bloomsburg-based Masonry Preservation Services Inc. has specialized in architectural maintenance and restoration since 1985. The firm’s work includes Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, where it performed repairs and restoration; the Jefferson Standard Building in Greensboro, N.C., one of the nation’s early skyscrapers; and the Pennsylvania Capitol building, where the company helped determine the cause of moisture infiltration and set standards for repair of the dome.
The company’s restoration of the iconic smokestack tower at the U.S. Penitentiary at Lewisburg earned a 2010 Historic Restoration Project of the Year designation by Masonry Construction magazine.
