Pennsylvania College of Technology presented alumni and student awards in conjunction with its recent graduation ceremonies.

1998 Alumnus of the Year
Tracie S. Gotshall, pastry chef for The Hotel Hershey, was honored as Pennsylvania College of Technology's 1998 Alumnus of the Year during the College's commencement exercises, held Saturday, May 16, in the Community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport.

At just 28 years of age, Gotshall is believed to be the youngest recipient of the College's Alumnus of the Year honor, which has been awarded since 1965. She earned an associate degree in food and hospitality management and a certificate in culinary arts from Penn College in 1991.

Gotshall joined the Hershey Resorts team in 1993. She is responsible for preparing the delectable desserts, pastries and specialty cakes available at the Hotel, along with supervising the pastry shop staff. Chef Gotshall's delights are prepared for the restaurants at The Hotel Hershey, including the renowned Circular Dining Room and The Fountain Cafe.

Prior to working at The Hotel Hershey, Gotshall was the chef at the Pine Barn Inn, in Danville, and was the baker and catering cook at Brown's Catering, also in Danville. She fine-tuned her dessert skills by working as an apprentice and attending marzipan courses in Hamburg, Germany. She also apprenticed under the direction of the pastry chef of the Northeastern United States Team during the 1992 Culinary Olympics.

Gotshall is the recipient of gold and silver medals and Best of Show professional awards from the American Culinary Federation in 1993. She also received the 1989 Apprentice of the Year Award and the 1992 Outstanding Achievement Award presented by the ACF Professional Chefs of Northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1993, the ACF presented her with certification as a working chef. She was featured in Chocolatier magazine in October 1996 and Culinary Trends in its fall 1997 issue.

A graduate of Columbia-Montour Vocational-Technical School, Gotshall is the daughter of Judy Shaw, of Danville, and the late Elmer Shaw Jr. She resides in Hummelstown with her husband, Steve, and their son, Joshua.

Nominations for the Outstanding Alumnus award are accepted for graduates of Penn College (or its predecessors, Williamsport Area Community College and Williamsport Technical Institute) who have made significant contributions in his/her chosen field or benefited his/her community, state or nation.
