Penn College Golfers Set for Conference Championships

Despite another up-and-down week weatherwise, most Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic teams saw action and for the golfers the season is about to conclude.
Golf
Competing Monday in the Dutchmen Spring Invitational at Lebanon Country Club, the Wildcats placed seventh in a 14-team field. Individually for Penn College, Corey Teeple, of Lake Ariel, fired a 79 on the 6,272-yard. par-72 course and finished tied for 16th among 74 players. Also for Penn College, Calvin Foust, of Palmyra, carded an 82; Sam Bubb, of Williamsport, shot an 83; Mike Saccoman, of Kingston, New York, shot an 89; and Jordan Hillegas, of Lancaster, shot a 96. Messiah College, led by medalist Austin Galaska who shot a 72, topped the team scoring with a 298 and was followed by Penn State Harrisburg with a 312; Neumann, 313; Elizabethtown, 316; Albright, 320, Alvernia, 328; Penn College, 333; Lebanon Valley, 334; Widener, 338; DeSales, 339; Delaware Valley, 353; Penn State Berks, 359; Lycoming College, 373; and FDU-Florham, 374.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats are scheduled to play in the Keuka Spring Invitational and then they wrap up their spring season Saturday and Sunday in the North Eastern Athletic Conference championships at Pennsauken (New Jersey) Country Club.
“It’s been an interesting season so far. The weather hasn’t cooperated not only for us, but for all of our sports,” coach Matt Haile said. “The guys are making some strides, they’re finding their swing, but it’s been slow going with the weather.
“I was pleased with their last match. Most of our lineup was under 90 on a course that we had never played, so I think they are coming along,” the sixth-year coach continued.
“We have a match (Wednesday) that I think will be a good practice round for them for the weekend championships,” Haile added.
Golfers will have a practice round on the 6,250-yard Pennsauken CC course on Friday.
“They will get a feel for it and then it’s 'go time' on Saturday and Sunday (with 18 holes being played each day.
“I think the key is staying patient … staying within themselves, not getting down on bad shots and just staying within their game,” Haile added.
In addition to Penn College, seven teams are expected to compete. They are Keuka College, Morrisville State, Penn State Abington, Penn State Berks, host Rutgers-Camden, SUNY Cobleskill and Wilson College.
Baseball
A three-run home run in the seventh inning by Zach Weil, of Kutztown, lifted Penn College to a 5-3 nonconference win at Elmira College on Tuesday, extending the Wildcats’ win streak to three. Also for Penn College, Carlos Rodriguez, of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, went 3 for 4 and scored twice. Kyle Fox, of Fleetwood, picked up the win with four innings of scoreless relief pitching and Zach Junk, of Cabot, earned his second save.
At the University of Scranton on Thursday, Scranton scored five runs in the first two innings and added five more in the fourth en route to a 10-8 nonconference win. James Simasek, of Landenberg, and Noah Esposito, of Williamsport, each had three hits in the loss while Jeremy Rall, of Williamsport, had two hits and scored two runs and Rodriguez had two hits and drove in three runs.
On Saturday in NEAC action at Penn State Berks, the Wildcats split, winning 4-2 and losing 3-1. In the win, Ryan Hostrander, of Williamsport, pitched seven strong innings, striking out nine while walking just one and giving up one run in improving to 2-1. Deric Ellerman, of Landisburg, went 3 for 4 at the plate. In the nightcap, Berks made a three-run third inning stand up for its win. Noah Esposito, of Williamsport, had two hits for Penn College as it dropped to 5-10 overall.
After Saturday’s games in the NEAC, Penn State Abington was 4-0, Cazenovia College and SUNY Poly both 2-0, Penn College 1-1, Lancaster Bible, Gallaudet and Penn State Berks all 1-3 and Keuka College 0-2.
Softball
Playing at home for the first time this season, the Lady Wildcats took two NEAC games from Cazenovia College on Saturday by scores of 11-10 in 11 innings and 8-0 in six innings. In the first game, Katie Kratzer, of Lynch Station, Virginia, went 4 for 6 with four runs batted in and three runs scored, but it was her last hit – a single to center – that drove in the winning run. Macie Lucas, of Reedsville, ended 3 for 5 at the plate with three RBI. Pitcher Arika Stopper, of Williamsport, went the distance on the mound, striking out 11 and walking two. In the second game, Shelby Lyter, of Allensville, pitched five shutout innings and helped her own cause by driving in three runs while Lucas went 4 for 4, including a double, drove in three runs and scored twice as the team improved to 5-11 overall.
After Saturday’s games in the NEAC, SUNY Cobleskill was 4-0, Cazenovia 4-3, Penn College 3-3, Keuka College 2-2, Morrisville State 2-5 and SUNY Poly 0-2.
Women’s Tennis
Hosting Wells College in NEAC action at the West Branch Tennis Club on Thursday, Penn College lost, 8-1. Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, was the lone Lady Wildcat winner at No. 1 singles.
On Saturday at St. Elizabeth College, Penn College won, 9-0. Winners in both singles and doubles for the Wildcats were Stabley; Morgan Blackwell, of Beech Creek; Rachel Gordon, of Greencastle; Rachel Walker, of Lewisburg; Erin Jacob, of Royersford; and Mikaila Lugo-Schlegel, of Lebanon, as the team went to 2-8 overall.
After Saturday’s matches in the NEAC West Division, Penn State Abington was 4-0, Keuka College 2-0, Wells College 3-1, Penn College 2-2, Penn State Berks 1-1, Lancaster Bible and Bryn Athyn both 0-2 and St. Elizabeth 0-4.
