A campus organization at Pennsylvania College of Technology is putting its money where its classmates are, starting a scholarship fund to help construction students meet the costs of their education.

Members of the Penn College Construction Association, a student chapter of the National Association of Home Builders, made the initial gift to a fund that will begin awarding scholarships in the Fall 2015 semester.

The scholarship is the brainchild of Michael J. Leventhal, a residential construction technology and management major from King of Prussia, and the club adviser, Levon A. Whitmyer, instructor of building construction technology. The two had the idea to create a scholarship for members of their student organization, and within weeks, the agreement was finalized.

“This industry and this school mean so much to me. They both have provided a wealth of knowledge to make me the person I am today,” said Whitmyer, a 1994 construction management graduate of Penn College.

“I just felt being an instructor here was not enough of a give-back to the students,” he added. “Michael and I sat down and talked about how we could make a difference in some student’s life moving forward. We felt a financial contribution would mean more than anything to a student trying to get by in pursuit of a degree. I take great pleasure in helping our students any way possible; their success provides me with a brief moment of satisfaction, before it is on to the next class of students.”

Preference for the scholarship will be full-time students with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (3.0 in their major) who are active PCCA members for at least a year. The association is generously supported by the West Branch Susquehanna Builders Association, which this year designated its gift to the new scholarship fund.

“It is exciting to see Penn College students getting involved in the scholarship process," said Robb Dietrich, executive director of the Penn College Foundation. "Students know the need for support is great. PCCA is one of several student groups working on scholarships right now, and we are so proud to support their efforts.”
