Penn College Basketball Teams Post 1-5 Week

Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s and women’s basketball teams continued their seasons last week with the women going 1-2 and the men 0-3, but battling tough. Wildcat wrestlers, meanwhile, got things rolling a week ago Sunday competing in the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Classic.
Men’s Basketball
In its most closely contested game of the season to date, the Wildcats dropped a 77-76 decision at home against Penn State DuBois on Tuesday. Penn College went ahead with 44 ticks left before DuBois hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to pull out its win. For Penn College, James Boylan, of Newton, N.J., scored a career-high 17 points while Ezra Adams, of Muncy, added 12 points and a team-leading 14 rebounds. Also for the Wildcats, Thomas Ross, of Williamsport, scored 11 points.
In the first of a two-game road trip to the western part of the state, Penn College turned the ball over 36 times and dropped a 99-69 decision to Penn State Beaver in Monaca on Friday night. Ross led the Wildcats with 14 points.
At McKeesport on Saturday, Penn College gave Penn State Greater Allegheny all it could handle and it took a last-second 3-point goal for the home team to pull out a 69-66 win. Ross led Penn College with 15 points and Nate Brown, of Philadelphia, scored 12 points and added eight assists as the Wildcats fell to 1-16 overall and 1-8 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.
Women’s Basketball
Getting into a groove after joining the team just the week before, Jamie Steer, of South Williamsport, scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Penn College scored a season-high 92 points in a 92-54 win Tuesday over Penn State DuBois. Also scoring in double figures for the Wildcats were Alica Ross, of Williamsport, 15; Danielle Mowery, of Shamokin, 13; and Alison Van Metter, of Saylorsburg, and Nicole Reyes-Molina, of Lancaster, with 10 each.
With 21 points, Steer again had the hot hand, and Ross and Charese Bova, of Beech Creek, each chipped in with 15 points, but Penn College went scoreless over the final four minutes and fell 88-70 at Penn State Beaver on Friday.
Back in action on Saturday at Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn College fell behind 24-4 early in the game before closing to within nine at 39-30 by the half. But a 43-point second half for the home team sent the Wildcats to their 14 th loss in 18 overall games and dropped them to 3-6 in the PSUAC. Mowery finished with 12 points for the Wildcats and Steer added 11.
Wrestling
Competing Jan. 19 in the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Classic at Millersville University against mostly NCAA Division I and II wrestlers, six Penn College grapplers lost both of their matches but gained valuable experience that coach Schuyler Frey hopes will pay dividends down the road. Wrestling for the Wildcats were Aaron Doll, of Glen Rock, at 125 pounds; Kyle Sunseri, of Athens, at 149 (he faced grapplers from Navy and Pitt); Joe Champluvier, of Laceyville, at 157 (who dropped decisions to wrestlers from Bucknell and Virginia); Taylor Porter, of Milton, at 165; Dan Frankenfield, of Dushore, at 174; and Pat Fitzgerald, of Port Royal, at 197 (his losses were to wrestlers from Bloomsburg and Penn State).
The team’s match scheduled for Wednesday against Thaddeus Stevens was postponed.
